Kerala CM calls for timely legal amendments to tackle AI-era challenges

Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has stressed the need for timely amendments to legal frameworks to keep pace with technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence. He was speaking in Kochi on Saturday while inaugurating a two-day seminar titled 'Music, Cinema and Law: Exploring the Intersections of Art, Culture and Law'.

The event was organised jointly by the Kerala Judicial Academy and the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS).

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister noted that technological progress had made it easier to copy creative works and violate copyright. He pointed out that music and visuals are increasingly being generated using AI, alongside a growing threat from digital defamation and deepfakes. In this context, he said, the legal framework requires periodic updating to remain effective.

Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court Soumen Sen observed that while art gives expression to human experiences, the role of law is to regulate and protect them. Justice V. Mohana of the Supreme Court attended the event as chief guest.

Among those who spoke were Higher Education Minister Roji M. John, Kerala Judicial Academy Board of Governors President Justice Anil K. Narendran, academy director K.N. Sujith and NUALS Vice-Chancellor G.B. Reddy.
