Kerala CM Calls FIR Against Rahul Gandhi a Challenge to Democracy

Kerala CM V.D. Satheesan condemns the FIR against Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on a 'purification' ritual, calling it an attack on democracy.

Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has strongly condemned the registration of an FIR against Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttarakhand. He described the action as a direct challenge to democratic principles and constitutional values.

The controversy stems from a 'purification' ritual performed at the Ramlila Ground in Haldwani after Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a rally there. Mr. Satheesan noted that this act raised serious and legitimate questions about dignity, equality, and caste discrimination.

Instead of addressing these concerns, the Chief Minister said, an FIR has been lodged against Mr. Gandhi for speaking out and demanding action. He asserted that Kerala strongly condemns such attempts to criminalise dissent.

"Political disagreement must be answered politically, not through intimidation and misuse of the law," Mr. Satheesan stated, urging that the focus remain on the substantive issues raised rather than on silencing critics.
