Kerala Film Chamber's 'My Talkies' OTT Platform Lauded as a Milestone for Malayalam Cinema
Kerala Film Chamber launches 'My Talkies' OTT platform; industry veterans Shwetha Menon and Sibi Malayil praise the initiative as a landmark for Malayalam cinema.
The Kerala Film Chamber's new over-the-top (OTT) streaming platform, 'My Talkies', has received a warm welcome from prominent figures in the Malayalam film industry. Actor Shwetha Menon and filmmaker Sibi Malayil have both hailed the initiative as a significant step forward for the sector, which recently celebrated its centenary.
Sibi Malayil, who serves as president of the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), described the venture as a landmark moment. He noted that while OTT platforms became a crucial medium for film viewing during the pandemic, this new service provides a dedicated space for producers to showcase their work to a global audience. Malayil expressed optimism that the platform would lead to better marketing opportunities and financial returns for the industry, with support from all its associations.
Addressing the platform's scope, Malayil clarified that while it is primarily beneficial for producers by offering a second life for films that may not perform well in theatres, it also creates significant opportunities for actors and technicians. The platform allows them to display their talents to a wider viewership worldwide.
Actor Shwetha Menon, a former president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), emphasised that the initiative ensures films are judged on their merit as cinema, rather than commercial grading. She argued that with the backing of the film fraternity and the Chamber, more producers will be encouraged to come forward, leading to a greater diversity of stories reaching audiences.
Menon also reflected on the emotional resonance of the platform's name, stating that cinema is a deeply personal medium for filmmakers. She described 'My Talkies' as a fitting title that signifies a sense of ownership and connection, wishing the Kerala Film Chamber and the entire fraternity success in this new creative avenue.
