Kerala High Court grants bail to teacher accused in Vadakara MDMA case

The Kerala High Court has granted bail to K. Kavya, the third accused in the alleged Vadakara drug trafficking case involving MDMA. Justice Kauser Edappagath allowed the application after noting that she had been in judicial custody since July 25 and that the investigation was nearly complete.

The court also recorded that Ms. Kavya had no criminal antecedents, concluding that her continued detention served no purpose. She is one of three special educators arrested in the case for allegedly acting as financial intermediaries for inter-State drug traffickers.

The bail was granted on conditions, including execution of a bond for ₹1 lakh with two solvent sureties, full cooperation with the investigation, weekly reporting to the investigating officer, and a restriction on travelling outside Kerala.

Ms. Kavya faces charges of conspiracy relating to the unlawful manufacture, possession, sale, purchase, transport, import or export, and use of psychotropic substances. The prosecution alleged that she and the other accused conspired to transport and sell narcotic drugs.

According to the prosecution, the first accused was found in possession of 2.108 grams of MDMA at Vadakara in the early hours of June 28. It was further contended that financial transactions in the case were routed through Ms. Kavya's bank account, in violation of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

The court had earlier granted bail to K.C. Keerthana, the second accused and a former teacher at the Perambra Block Resource Centre, who was allegedly involved as a financial intermediary in the same case.
