Kerala launches Hridayaragam pilot to strengthen chronic disease care
Kerala's Hridayaragam initiative will pilot in three areas to improve long-term management of diabetes and hypertension.
Kerala is set to pilot a new healthcare initiative aimed at improving the long-term management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The programme, named Hridayaragam, will focus on ensuring continuity of care for patients with chronic conditions.
The pilot will be launched in three locations: Vattiyurkavu in Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, and Nilambur. The selection of these diverse regions is intended to test the model across different geographical and demographic settings.
The move comes in response to the rising burden of lifestyle diseases in the state. Current estimates indicate that one in four adults in Kerala lives with diabetes, while one in three adults has hypertension. These figures underscore the need for a structured, ongoing approach to treatment rather than episodic care.
By concentrating on continuity, the initiative aims to ensure that patients receive consistent follow-up, medication adherence, and monitoring over time. The outcomes of the pilot are expected to inform a broader rollout across the state.
