Kerala to Keep Up Multiplex Food Inspections After 25 Violation Cases

Kerala will continue its drive against food overpricing and short-measure sales at multiplexes, the state's Food and Civil Supplies Minister has said, with enforcement teams set to keep up surprise checks at cinema food counters.

The decision follows a wave of public complaints about inflated prices and inaccurate quantities at multiplex outlets. Acting on these grievances, state authorities have so far carried out 35 surprise inspections, which led to 25 cases being registered for violations.

The Minister said the inspections would not be a one-off exercise, signalling sustained scrutiny of food and beverage sales at multiplexes across the state. The focus of the drive is on two recurring complaints: prices charged above permissible levels and the supply of food in quantities smaller than what customers pay for.

With 25 cases already booked from the initial round of checks, the enforcement effort is expected to widen as more complaints come in. Officials have not indicated how long the drive will run or which locations will be covered next.

The action places multiplex food counters under closer watch at a time when consumers have repeatedly flagged the cost of snacks and beverages sold inside cinema halls.
