Kerala to Decide on PM-SHRI Scheme After Cabinet Panel Submits Report
Kerala will decide on implementing PM-SHRI schools scheme only after a Cabinet sub-committee report, says minister.
The Kerala government will take a call on implementing the PM-SHRI (PM Schools for Rising India) scheme only after a special Cabinet sub-committee submits its report, General Education Minister N. Samsudheen said on Sunday.
The previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had signed an agreement with the Centre to roll out the scheme in the state. Implementation, however, was stalled after opposition emerged within the ruling front at the time.
After the United Democratic Front (UDF) came to power — a coalition that had opposed the scheme — it set up a Cabinet sub-committee to examine the matter afresh.
Responding to reporters, Samsudheen noted that differences persist between the state and the Centre over how the scheme should be implemented. He pointed out that the earlier government had given an assurance to the Centre, which forms the background for the current deliberations.
"The previous government signed it and gave an assurance to the Centre that we would implement it. That is the background before us. So, we are considering what should be done in such a situation," he said.
The minister added that there was no urgency to decide on the matter. "There is no emergency in the matter. A decision will be made later," he stated.
