Kerala Braces for Three Days of Rain as Bay System Intensifies
Kerala expects widespread rain for three days from September 23 as a Bay of Bengal depression moves towards the east coast, prompting yellow alerts in multiple districts.
Kerala is set to experience widespread rainfall over three days starting Wednesday, September 23, 2026, as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal advances towards the country's eastern coastline.
A bulletin from the India Meteorological Department on Tuesday said the well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a depression. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal by Tuesday night.
It is then likely to reach the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast and cross between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur as a deep depression from Wednesday night into the early hours of September 24.
The depression, combined with a trough running from the southeast Arabian Sea to the cyclonic circulation associated with the system, across Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh, is expected to boost rainfall over Kerala during this period.
A yellow alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Wednesday, warning of isolated heavy rain. Five districts in northern Kerala are also under a yellow alert for Thursday.
