Khairatabad Assembly seat declared vacant after Danam Nagender's disqualification

The Telangana Legislative Assembly Secretariat has formally notified the disqualification of Danam Nagender as the member elected from the Khairatabad Assembly constituency, officially leaving the seat vacant and opening the door to a by-election.

The notification was issued on Monday, September 28, 2026, days after the Telangana High Court ordered his disqualification on September 18 under the anti-defection provisions.

The case against Mr. Nagender centred on his decision to contest the Secunderabad Lok Sabha seat as a Congress candidate even though he had been elected to the Assembly on a Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) ticket. The High Court ruled that his disqualification would be effective from April 23, 2024, the date on which he filed his nomination for the parliamentary constituency.

Mr. Nagender took the matter to the Supreme Court, which declined to grant him any relief, allowing the disqualification to stand.

With the Assembly Secretariat's notification now in place, the Khairatabad constituency is officially without a representative. A fresh election is required to fill the seat, and the Election Commission will announce the by-election schedule in due course.
