Khushbu Sundar Backs Katrina Kaif, Questions Double Standards on Women's Ageing

Actor-politician Khushbu Sundar has publicly backed Katrina Kaif after the actor drew remarks about changes in her appearance following the birth of her son, using the occasion to question why women's bodies and ages remain subjects of constant public commentary.

In a detailed social media post, Khushbu said women are placed under pressure to preserve a particular appearance as they grow older, and asked why society remains preoccupied with whether a woman is still in her "prime" or why her looks have changed.

Drawing a contrast with how men are viewed, she noted that a man who loses his hair is called distinguished, one who develops a 40-inch waist is not asked what happened to his prime, and one who greys is described as salt-and-pepper handsome, mature and charismatic.

She further questioned who fixed a "prime" for women and why they are expected to look exactly as they did when they first became popular.

Turning to motherhood, Khushbu described childbirth as a rebirth for a woman, involving immense hormonal, physical, emotional and psychological changes as her body carries, nurtures and brings another life into the world. She said that instead of celebrating this, society scrutinises how a woman looks afterwards.

Extending her support to Katrina, she said the actor was, is and will always be beautiful. Recalling her own experience, Khushbu said she was ridiculed when she was heavier and was even cast as women portrayed as obese and ugly, while after losing weight she now faces claims that she must be on injections. She asked how many of those passing such remarks had paid for any such treatment.

Her conclusion was that society will always find something to say about a woman regardless of her appearance, actions or stage of life, and that women are not answerable to every man who assumes the right to describe, dissect or define them.
