King Charles Reaffirms Sussexes' Non-Working Royal Status After UK Return

King Charles III has formally reiterated that Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, remain non-working members of the royal family and will not carry out official duties on behalf of the Crown. The clarification comes after the couple's recent return to the United Kingdom following a six-year residence in North America.

In a letter dispatched on Monday, the Lord Chamberlain, the most senior official of the royal household, stated that the Duke and Duchess stepped down from representative duties in January 2020. The letter affirmed that this position "will continue to be fully respected" and that there is "no change to the current status" of the couple.

The communication was sent to senior figures in the British government and military, as well as to Prince Harry's team, to provide clarity as the royal family's new schedule of engagements begins. The letter also clarified that any charitable activities undertaken by the couple are considered "a personal matter for them both" and are conducted in their private capacity.

It further described their position as being "akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests." All correspondence and administrative matters concerning the couple should be directed to their own office, which operates separately from the Royal Household.

The Sussexes stepped back from royal duties in 2020, a move followed by a public rift with other family members. Despite the strained relations, they returned to the UK late last month with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who have been enrolled in British schools.
