Kishan Reddy Questions Nizam's Legacy at Telangana Liberation Day Event
Kishan Reddy criticised Congress and BRS for allegedly glorifying the Nizam's rule at the Centre's Telangana Liberation Day celebrations.
Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Tuesday questioned the glorification of the Nizam's rule, asking why figures such as Komuram Bheem and Chakali Ailamma rebelled against it if the regime was as benevolent as its defenders suggest.
Speaking at the Telangana Liberation Day celebrations organised by the Centre, Mr. Reddy took aim at the Congress and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), accusing both parties of whitewashing the Nizam's administration to appease a particular section of voters and of "bowing before" the AIMIM.
The Minister's remarks centred on the contradiction he sees in celebrating the Nizam's era while ignoring the resistance it provoked. He invoked Komuram Bheem and Chakali Ailamma — both remembered for their revolts against the erstwhile princely state — to argue that the region's history of struggle cannot be reconciled with a favourable portrayal of the Nizam's government.
Mr. Reddy further alleged that the Congress and the BRS have, for political reasons, chosen to overlook the hardships of the period and have instead deferred to the AIMIM. The Centre's decision to mark Telangana Liberation Day is itself a point of contention, with the event serving as a platform for the BJP's reading of the state's past.
