KMRL tightens media and official communication rules for its officials

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has issued a circular placing restrictions on how its officials communicate with the media and external agencies, citing the need to protect the organisation's public image and improve its work culture.

The circular was issued by District Collector G. Priyanka, who is currently holding charge of the KMRL managing director. It warns that stern disciplinary action will be taken against officials who fail to follow the instructions.

Under the new rules, all letters sent to government agencies, the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MoHUA) and the Railway Board for administrative purposes must carry the managing director's permission. For correspondence related to financial projects and operational matters, the approval of the concerned directors is required.

Communications with media organisations and on social media must be routed through KMRL's public relations officer. The circular attributes this requirement to misunderstandings among the public following the publication of certain news content, which it says can also damage the agency's image and its standing with the government.

Officials who need to flag any matter can do so confidentially to the managing director. However, anonymous letters will not be entertained, the circular states.
