Kolkata Police File Suo Motu FIR Against Mamata Banerjee Over Student Meet

Kolkata Police have registered a suo motu First Information Report (FIR) against former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee over an alleged violation of Calcutta High Court-imposed conditions for a student organisation event.

The FIR was filed on Saturday at the Hastings Police Station. It names Banerjee along with the organisers of the meeting held by the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the ruling party in the state.

The case stems from a foundation day event organised by the TMCP on Friday at Cathedral Road in central Kolkata. The Calcutta High Court had reportedly laid down specific conditions under which the gathering was permitted to take place.

A police officer said the FIR was registered after authorities examined the court's directives and found that the conditions had not been followed. "The role of all those involved in the violation will be examined during the course of the investigation," the officer added.

The development marks a significant legal escalation involving the state's top political leadership. The investigation will now determine the extent of individual responsibility in the alleged breach of the court's order.
