MLA Reviews Stalled Kollam Indoor Stadium Ahead of Minister's Visit

Eravipuram MLA Vishnu Mohan led a joint inspection of the Olympian Suresh Babu Indoor Stadium on Sunday, September 20, 2026, to assess the technical hurdles and discrepancies that have brought construction to a standstill. The project has already recorded an expenditure of more than ₹33 crore.

During the visit, the MLA examined the problems on the ground and held discussions with officials on ways to resolve them. With work currently frozen, the review focused on the present status of the project and the path forward. Mr. Mohan directed the authorities concerned to ensure that the remaining construction is completed within a fixed timeframe.

Describing the indoor stadium as a key project for the development of sports infrastructure in Kollam, the MLA said the aim is to finish the work quickly and open the facility to athletes and the public.

The inspection comes a day before Sports Minister O. J. Janeesh is scheduled to visit the major stadiums in the Eravipuram constituency on Monday, September 21, 2026. The ministerial tour will cover both the Olympian Suresh Babu Indoor Stadium and the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium.

The visit is expected to take up follow-up measures to clear the obstacles at the stalled indoor stadium and complete it on schedule, issues relating to construction at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium, and the next steps for launching the proposed Kavadivayal Stadium project in Mayyanad panchayat.

Representatives of the Sports Kerala Foundation (SKF) and KITCO, the agencies handling implementation, along with officials from KIIFB and the Kollam Corporation, will accompany the Minister during the inspection and the discussions that follow.

Mr. Mohan said the projects are of immense importance to the district's sports infrastructure and that the Minister's visit would help overcome the current construction obstacles and speed up progress.
