Monkey Attack in Karnataka's Koppal Claims Life of 91-Year-Old Woman

A 91-year-old woman has died after being attacked by a monkey at her residence in Koppal district, Karnataka. The woman, identified as Najamunnisa Begum, was the wife of the well-known writer M.S. Savadatti.

Family members said she was walking through the compound of her house in B.T. Patil Nagar when the monkey suddenly lunged at her, causing her to fall to the ground. The attack was recorded by a CCTV camera installed outside the home.

When her daughter hurried out to help her, the monkey attacked her as well, according to the family.

Najamunnisa was taken to a private hospital for treatment. She appeared to be recovering at first, but her condition deteriorated later, and she died while still under care the next day.

The death adds to a string of recent incidents in which monkeys have attacked elderly women, some of them fatal.

On September 10, a 55-year-old woman died after falling from her rooftop while trying to escape monkeys in Gabhana, Aligarh. She had gone up to dry clothes when the animals surrounded her.

A similar case was reported in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, on September 14, when a woman died after falling from a rooftop following a sudden monkey attack in the cemetery area. The incident triggered protests by residents, who demanded Rs 5 lakh in compensation for her family and flagged what they described as a sharp rise in aggressive wildlife, including monkeys, langurs and stray dogs.

In March this year, a 65-year-old woman, Chinna Bulli, died in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, after reportedly being chased by a group of monkeys while returning from her fields. She panicked, tried to flee and lost her balance, suffering fatal injuries in the fall.
