Growing concern over highly concentrated kratom-derived products has prompted addiction specialists and public health experts to warn that the substances may pose far greater dangers than many users assume.
The products in question contain 7-hydroxymitragynine, commonly referred to as 7-OH, a compound derived from kratom. They are widely available in gas stations, smoke shops and convenience stores, according to the warnings.
Experts say 7-OH products are increasingly linked to dependence, withdrawal symptoms and effects similar to those of opioids. The concentration of the compound in these products is a central concern, distinguishing them from traditional kratom preparations.
Dr. Sarah Kawasaki, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral health and medical director of advancement and recovery at an opioid treatment program at Penn State Health, has outlined what 7-OH and kratom are, why they can be dangerous and addictive, and what warning signs parents should watch for if they suspect their children may be using them.
The cautions come amid rising nationwide attention to the spread of such products and their potential for harm.
