Krishna district police seek DNA samples from families of Nepal flood victims

Krishna district Superintendent of Police V. Vidyasagar Naidu has appealed to the families of those killed in the recent Nepal flash floods to come forward with biological samples for DNA testing, in an effort to identify bodies and mortal remains recovered from the disaster.

The exercise follows directions from the Ministry of Home Affairs, which has offered DNA profiling free of cost for the identification of victims, the SP said. Samples collected from relatives in the district will be sent to Nepal, where they will be matched against unidentified bodies and remains retrieved from the flood-hit areas.

Parents, sons, daughters and siblings of the victims have been asked to approach their nearest police station. Officers there will coordinate the collection of samples at the Government Forensic Science Laboratory, Mr. Naidu said in a release.

Families can also submit the names of people still missing in the tragedy. Police personnel have been instructed to record these details and to extend cooperation to the bereaved families across the district.
