Rain claims three lives in Krishna and NTR districts, four injured
Three people died and four were injured in separate rain-related incidents in Krishna and NTR districts, with crops damaged and NDRF teams deployed.
Heavy rain across Krishna and NTR districts of Andhra Pradesh claimed three lives and left four people injured on Thursday, with authorities responding to flooding, electrocution and structural damage in several mandals.
In Mopidevi mandal of Krishna district, 53-year-old Darapureddy Samrajyam died after coming into contact with a snapped live wire lying on the road at Peddakallepalli village. Avanigadda Deputy Superintendent of Police R. Abhishek confirmed the death.
In a separate incident, two young men were killed when the motorcycle they were riding was struck by a four-wheeler on the Penumudi bridge at Avanigadda. Police suspect poor visibility and a slippery road surface caused by the rain led to the collision. The Avanigadda police registered a case and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination.
Gales at Chintalapadu village in Tiruvuru mandal damaged 30 houses and left four people injured, according to Mylavaram Assistant Commissioner of Police P. Ramachandar Rao. Pickets have been posted at Ultavagu, Kakalavagu, Kattaleru and other streams as a precautionary measure, he said.
At Nunna village in Krishna district, a car was swept away by the swollen Pedavaagu. Its occupants, Srinivas Reddy and his wife, were rescued.
Standing crops suffered damage in Nandigama, Jaggaiahpet, Tiruvuru and other parts of NTR and Krishna districts. NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha, MLA Kolikapudi Srinivas, MRO Rajya Lakshmi and other officials toured villages in Tiruvuru, Mylavaram and Nandigama mandals to assess the situation.
Relief and rescue teams have been mobilised. National Disaster Response Force Commandant V.V.N. Prasanna Kumar said five teams were dispatched to Srikakulam, Parvathipuram-Manyam, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema and Alluri Sitharamaraju districts, while a team from the Regional Response Centre in Visakhapatnam was deployed in affected areas of Visakhapatnam district.
Krishna district Superintendent of Police V. Vidyasagar Naidu said pickets had been arranged on roads where streams were overflowing. In Eluru district, Collector K. Vetriselvi and Superintendent of Police K. Pratap Shiva Kishore urged residents not to cross overflowing rivulets and to vacate dilapidated buildings.
