KTR seeks Supreme Court suo motu inquiry into ECI functioning

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K.T. Rama Rao has called on the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognizance of the concerns surrounding the functioning of the Election Commission of India, warning that the poll body is confronting a severe crisis of confidence.

Speaking on the matter, Rama Rao said the Commission, as a constitutional authority, must remain above suspicion. He argued that no agency other than the Supreme Court carries the credibility required to conduct an impartial investigation into the questions being raised.

"ECI is a constitutional body. We cannot believe any other agency to investigate other than the Supreme Court of India," he said. "The Supreme Court needs to take cognizance of what former Election Commissioners are saying and launch a suo motu inquiry into the matter. Hopefully, some answers will come out and the truth will prevail."

Recalling his party's earlier engagement with the Commission, Rama Rao said he had led a BRS delegation to New Delhi to meet three Election Commissioners and raise serious apprehensions about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. He added that concerns were also submitted formally during the Bihar elections, with the party pressing the poll body to address rumours, clear up ambiguities and bring full transparency to the revision exercise.

Despite these representations, he said, serious doubts and questions continue to persist over the Commission's impartiality. Only an inquiry monitored by the top court, he stressed, can restore public trust and safeguard the core tenets of Indian democracy.
