Japan's weather agency has recorded over 590 felt earthquakes in Kumamoto since a powerful quake, urging residents to stay alert.
Seismic activity continues to disrupt life in Kumamoto Prefecture, southwestern Japan, where the national weather agency has logged more than 590 locally felt earthquakes since a powerful temblor struck late last month.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that 591 felt earthquakes had been recorded in the area as of 10:00 local time on Monday. The figure underscores the sustained instability of the region's geological conditions.
Agency officials stated that earthquake activity in the area remains elevated and cautioned that tremors reaching a maximum intensity of lower 5 or greater on Japan's seismic scale are still possible. They have urged residents to remain vigilant for approximately the next month.
The warning comes as communities in towns like Hikawa continue to grapple with the aftermath. Footage from the area shows damaged houses and cars, a bridge marked with a "No Passing" notice, and a train station where a locomotive displays a notice of service suspension. Local businesses, however, appear to be operating, with customers seen paying at a store despite the ongoing disruption.
