Kumarakom to deploy robots in month-long fight against Vembanad water hyacinth

The backwaters around Kumarakom, a stretch of Vembanad lake known for its scenic beauty, are set to get a technological assist in tackling a persistent ecological nuisance. A one-month pilot project, beginning September 10, will deploy a robotic system designed to mechanically harvest water hyacinth from the lake's surface.
The initiative is not limited to clearing the invasive weed. Authorities will also use the pilot period to explore ways of processing the harvested hyacinth into value-added products, potentially turning an environmental problem into an economic opportunity.
Water hyacinth has long been a challenge for Vembanad, choking waterways, disrupting boat movement, and harming aquatic life. The robotic harvester is expected to offer a more efficient and less labour-intensive alternative to manual removal methods.
The project's outcome will be closely watched by environmental agencies and local stakeholders, as a successful trial could pave the way for wider deployment across other affected stretches of the lake.
