Kunal Ghosh Claims Second Attack in 24 Hours, Alleges Threat to Life
Trinamool MLA Kunal Ghosh has alleged a second attack on his car in 24 hours, prompting Abhishek Banerjee to seek the Governor's intervention.
Kunal Ghosh, an MLA from the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool faction, has alleged that he was attacked for a second time in 24 hours, claiming that masked men on motorcycles chased his vehicle and smashed its windshields.
Ghosh said the incident took place on Sunday while he was travelling to attend a political programme in his Beleghata constituency. According to his account, the men followed his car from the time he left home and used a revolver and a hammer to break the windows.
"Attack on me yesterday in Uttarpara was not enough. Today I am convinced that there are attempts to kill me," he told reporters afterwards.
The alleged attack came a day after Ghosh said he was targeted in Hooghly on Saturday while on his way to a rally addressed by party chief Mamata Banerjee. Video of that incident showed a crowd stopping his car and pelting it with eggs, with slogans telling him to go back. His vehicle was damaged and he returned to Kolkata.
Abhishek Banerjee, a Lok Sabha MP and a senior leader in the party, condemned the incidents and said it was the second attack on Ghosh in under 18 hours. Writing on X, he said armed men had targeted an elected representative, allegedly because he had refused to change sides, and asked what such a situation meant for ordinary citizens of West Bengal.
He appealed to Governor R N Ravi to intervene immediately and speak to the Director General of West Bengal Police and the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, demanding that every perpetrator be identified and brought to justice.
Several leaders in Mamata Banerjee's camp have claimed they have faced attacks since the party's defeat in the Bengal assembly elections in May. They blame the BJP for the violence, while the ruling party has described such incidents as public anger directed at what it calls corrupt leaders.
