Kuvempu University result tampering: staffer and student booked in Shivamogga
Kuvempu University has lodged a police complaint after a BSc student's failed results were altered to passes using a digital signature certificate.
A case of examination-result tampering has surfaced at Kuvempu University in Karnataka's Shivamogga district, where a student's marks were changed on the Unified University and College Management System (UUCMS) portal by misusing the digital signature certificate meant for authorised corrections.
The Bhadravati Rural Police registered the case against a university staff member and the student, acting on a complaint from Professor R. Thimmarayappa, Registrar (Evaluation).
The student, Varshith N., is a fifth-semester BSc. candidate at PES Institute of Advanced Management Studies in Shivamogga. He appeared for the November-December 2025 examinations and was declared failed in two papers when results were announced on April 4, 2026. The records were later changed to show him as having passed both papers, with the alteration made on June 22.
The matter came to light after a guest faculty member in the MBA Department complained to the Registrar (Administration) on September 7. The then Registrar (Administration), N. Hemanth, instructed the Registrar (Evaluation) to file a police complaint, which was submitted on September 10.
According to the complaint, Anusha, a temporary employee engaged as an admin to handle UUCMS work, allegedly altered the results and took ₹10,000 from the student to assign pass marks in each subject.
The Registrar (Evaluation) is issued a fresh Digital Signature Certificate, valid as a one-day password, every day. This credential is passed to the admin for making corrections to student data on the UUCMS portal. Prof. Thimmarayappa said the accused used the one-day password to change marks without his knowledge.
He said the temporary staff member has been removed from duty and replaced by a permanent university employee. The university is checking whether the accused was involved in tampering with the results of other students, and is considering a wider investigation into the matter.
Police have booked Anusha and Varshith N. for criminal breach of trust, cheating and forgery, among other offences.
