Russian Drone Barrage Hits Kyiv in Daylight, Killing Two and Wounding 23
Two people were killed and 23 wounded when Russian drones struck Kyiv in a rare daytime attack, sparking fires and damaging buildings.
Russian drones struck Ukraine's capital in a daylight attack on Wednesday, killing two people and wounding 23 others, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepared to meet world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly.
Black smoke rose over Kyiv after the barrage, the latest in a series of near-daily Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. The drones started fires and damaged buildings in the capital and elsewhere in the country, authorities said.
In Kyiv, emergency workers cleared rubble from a damaged building while onlookers gathered nearby. A body was seen lying on the ground before being lifted and placed into an ambulance. Several cars were also damaged.
Yulia Matash, 45, was working in one of the buildings hit in the attack. She described the moment her manager ordered staff to take cover and the chaos that followed as injured colleagues arrived at the shelter.
"We were at work when the manager ran up to us and said we had to go to the shelter immediately. We all went. Five minutes later, people with burns and other injuries began coming down," she said. "We waited, thinking it was all over, but the manager said there would be a second wave. Some time passed, and then there was another strike."
Matash said the experience left her shaken. "I feel nervous. It's like a horror movie I watched a long time ago," she said.
The strike unfolded as Zelenskyy was due to take part in the gathering of global leaders in New York, where the war in Ukraine is expected to feature prominently.
