Kyiv Endures: Daily Life Persists as Russian Attacks Intensify

A photojournalist's month-long stay in Kyiv and its surrounding areas has captured a city deeply marked by war, where the sounds of air raid alerts and the rush to shelters have become part of daily existence.

During the visit, Russian drone and missile attacks on the capital intensified. Alerts sounded day and night, and when major strikes were anticipated, thousands of residents sought safety in metro stations. Firefighters and emergency crews responded repeatedly to strikes across the city.

The war's intrusion into ordinary life was stark. People returned to damaged homes and businesses, mourned the dead, and recovered from injuries. Some residents survived strikes by mere meters, while one couple celebrated their wedding on the same day a drone damaged their apartment.

Yet life continued. Cafes filled, children attended school and filed into shelters, and soldiers returned home for brief visits with their families. Each morning, people paused for a nationwide minute of silence to honor those killed.

On this fourth trip to Ukraine, the photojournalist observed a shift from previous visits: earlier confidence and hope that the war might soon end had given way to greater exhaustion, resignation, and little expectation of an immediate end to the fighting. Kyiv, the account suggests, is a city living not between moments of war, but within them.
