Kyiv missile barrage kills 12 as fires rage across capital
Russian missiles kill 12 in Kyiv overnight, wound 33, and spark fires across 12 locations in three districts.
An overnight Russian missile barrage killed at least 12 people in Kyiv, Ukrainian authorities said Thursday, as explosions echoed across the capital and emergency crews battled fires through the early morning.
At least 33 people were wounded in the attack, according to Ukraine's Emergency Service. The air raid alert remained active into Thursday morning as crews worked at the scene, pulling survivors from beneath the rubble.
The strikes hit 12 locations across the Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts, damaging residential buildings, a medical facility and an educational institution.
In the Solomianskyi district, the top two floors of a nine-story residential building were destroyed, with fires breaking out on other floors. People were also trapped in two other residential buildings and a school shelter, officials said.
Russia has intensified ballistic missile attacks on the capital in recent weeks, a tactic aimed at depleting Kyiv's air defense stocks. Ukraine has limited systems capable of intercepting ballistic threats, and supplies of missiles for its U.S.-made Patriot systems remain chronically constrained.
A U.S. decision to allow Ukraine to produce Patriot systems domestically was later reversed, leaving Kyiv reliant on limited foreign supplies.
