Overnight Russian Barrage Kills 16 in Kyiv, Damages Infrastructure

A coordinated Russian assault involving ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones pounded Kyiv and its surroundings overnight, killing at least 16 people and wounding around 40 others, according to Ukrainian officials.

The attack, which lasted for hours, targeted multiple districts in the capital. Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko confirmed that three districts sustained significant damage, including hits on critical infrastructure. "Last night we have mix attack - ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones," he said, adding that while services were restored, the intent was clear. He characterized the targeting of utilities as an act of genocide, noting the Russians' aim to deprive citizens of electricity, heating, and water.

Residents described the terror of the night. "The explosions were terrifying, getting closer and closer, one after another," said Lyudmyla Danylova, a 58-year-old resident. While she and her family were unharmed, the blast wave was felt intensely, causing tiles to fall in a bathroom just a hundred meters away. Another resident, Oleksandr Hnatiuk, recounted being inside a building when the strike hit, his car thrown and burned to the ground.

Emergency services reported 15 fatalities within the capital and one more in the surrounding region. The Ukrainian air force noted that the barrage included fast-flying jet-powered drones, which added further strain on air defenses already dealing with ballistic missiles. Hits were recorded at 28 locations across the country, though Kyiv was the primary target.

Russia's defense ministry claimed the attack successfully struck a Kyiv industrial site involved in producing components for Ukraine's Flamingo cruise missiles, as well as drone production and storage facilities, an ammunition depot, and a logistics center. The assault underscores the continued intensity of Moscow's campaign against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
