Deadly Russian strikes shroud Kyiv in smoke as US envoys visit
Russian overnight strikes kill two and wound at least 10 in Kyiv, sending black smoke over the city during a US envoy visit.
A fresh wave of Russian drone and missile attacks has left two people dead and at least ten others injured in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, local authorities reported on Tuesday. The overnight assault, which also targeted the southern Odesa region, sent thick plumes of black smoke billowing across the city skyline.
Ukrainian air defence units reported shooting down or suppressing two ballistic missiles, 31 cruise missiles, and 142 drones. According to the Air Force, impacts were recorded across 29 locations, with residential buildings and civilian infrastructure in Kyiv sustaining significant damage.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack as highly complex, noting it appeared deliberately designed to inflict maximum destruction. He highlighted the use of ballistic and cruise missiles alongside anti-ship missiles and Shahed drones in the barrage.
The strikes came shortly after US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff arrived in Kyiv for their first official visit, part of a renewed diplomatic push to end the conflict. The attack follows a brief pause in hostilities over the weekend.
