La Jolla man pleads guilty to kicking sea lion at beach

An 18-year-old from La Jolla has admitted to kicking a protected sea lion in an attack that was captured on video and widely shared online.

Tyler Muehl pleaded guilty on Thursday to a federal charge of violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The incident occurred on July 22 at La Jolla Cove beach, where Muehl repeatedly kicked the animal as it tried to escape.

The viral video shows Muehl kicking at the sea lion while it sat on a sea wall, with laughter audible in the background. He then follows the animal, continuing to kick as it attempts to scoot away.

In his plea agreement, Muehl admitted to kicking at the sea lion four times, landing at least two blows. He also acknowledged that the video accurately depicted the attack.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration advises people to stay at least 50 feet away from sea lions, seals, and other marine mammals protected by federal law.

Eric Morgan, an official with NOAA-Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement West Coast Division, said, "Intentionally striking or kicking a marine mammal is not only illegal — it is dangerous for the well-being of the animal."

Muehl faces up to one year in prison and a fine of $100,000. His sentencing is scheduled for October 20.
