Lagos Muslims Mark Eid al-Mawlid With Parade of Faith and Unity

Thousands of Muslim worshippers took to the streets of Lagos on Tuesday for Eid al-Mawlid, an annual parade commemorating the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. The procession wound through parts of the city as participants danced and carried portraits of the Prophet, while mosques and Islamic organizations hosted Quran recitations, lectures, and charity drives.

The celebration falls on the 12th day of Rabi-ul-Awwal in the Islamic calendar. For many attendees, the day carried deep personal meaning. Ibrahim Bala, a participant, emphasized common ground between faiths, saying that while Christians and Muslims practice different religions, they serve the same God. He added that Islam teaches unity, respect for other religions, and equality among people.

Another attendee, Biola Ayodele, said studying the Prophet's life has given her wisdom and understanding about living as a true Muslim. Muhammad Habib described the day as priceless and invaluable, while Muhammad Jamiu called the Prophet "a man of God and man of the people," whose actions remain a lesson for all.

The observance comes at a time when Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, continues to grapple with high living costs and economic hardship that have strained households across the country.
