Overnight Battle on Monte Goj: 100 Firefighters Hold Line Near Lake Como

Firefighters in northern Italy fought through the night to prevent a large forest fire on Monte Goj from reaching residential areas near Lake Como. The operation, which began on Thursday, involved around 100 personnel working to contain the advancing flames.

Aerial support played a key role, with helicopters repeatedly lifting large buckets of water from a nearby container and dumping them on the fire front. The aircraft were seen flying directly toward the blaze as ground crews worked to protect structures.

As a precautionary measure, several residential buildings in the area were evacuated, according to Italian media reports. The evacuation helped clear the immediate danger zone as the fire crept closer to inhabited areas.

Reinforcements from other regions arrived on Friday morning, including two Canadair planes, to bolster the ongoing firefighting effort. The additional aircraft were expected to provide heavier water-dropping capacity as daylight improved visibility.

The blaze is the latest in a series of wildfires that have been fueled by intense heat waves across Europe in recent weeks. The extreme conditions have created a tinderbox environment from western Europe to the Balkans, stretching firefighting resources across the continent.

Authorities have not yet reported any injuries, and the focus remains on containing the fire before it reaches more populated zones along the lake's edge.
