Jackie Shroff and PM Modi honoured Lata Mangeshkar on her 97th birth anniversary, recalling her vast contribution to Indian music and culture.
Veteran actor Jackie Shroff paid tribute to legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar on her 97th birth anniversary, sharing a collage of vintage photographs of the singer on Instagram. "Lata ji always in our hearts," he wrote, accompanying the post with a red heart emoji.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remembered the singer in a post on X. He described her as "Lata Didi" and said he offered his humble respects on her birth anniversary, noting that she had brought honour to the nation worldwide through her singing. The Prime Minister said she enriched the country with her melodious notes and consistently encouraged efforts linked to its progress. He added that her contribution to Indian music would remain memorable for generations.
Lata Mangeshkar would have turned 97 on Saturday. She died in Mumbai in 2022 at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate across generations.
Known as the Nightingale of India, she was far more than a playback singer. From the 1940s, her voice defined the sound of Hindi cinema and also shaped music in Marathi and many other Indian languages. She recorded songs in more than 36 Indian languages.
Her career was marked by collaborations with many of the country's leading composers, including Naushad, S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman, Madan Mohan, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and A.R. Rahman. Songs such as "Aayega Aanewala," "Lag Jaa Gale," "Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya" and "Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon" remain enduring landmarks in India's musical memory.
Her contributions were recognised with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989, the Padma Bhushan in 1969, the Padma Vibhushan in 1999 and the Bharat Ratna in 2001. These honours acknowledged not only her artistic excellence but also her role in shaping India's cultural identity.
