Lee Chang-dong returns to Venice with Possible Love after eight-year gap

Veteran South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong made his much-anticipated return to the Venice Film Festival on Sunday with the world premiere of his latest drama, Possible Love (Korean title: Ga-neung-han sa-rang). The film marks his first directorial outing in eight years.
Walking the red carpet alongside the director were the film's lead actors — Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong — who posed for photographers and greeted fans gathered outside the festival venue.
The narrative of Possible Love centres on two married couples who become involved in making a documentary about their contrasting lives and desires, exploring themes of intimacy and aspiration.
Lee's association with the Venice Film Festival dates back to 2002, when his film Oasis earned him the Silver Lion for Best Director. This year, Possible Love is among 21 titles competing for the festival's top honour, the Golden Lion.
The jury for this edition is chaired by American filmmaker and actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, with members including Kaouther Ben Hania, Daniel Blumberg, Francesco Casetti, Xavier Giannoli, Shahrbanoo Sadat and Johnnie To.
The 83rd Venice International Film Festival is scheduled to run until 12 September 2026.
