South Korea's Lee, Trump Discuss Warship Construction Cooperation
South Korea's presidential office says President Lee Jae Myung and US President Donald Trump discussed cooperating on warship construction.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and US President Donald Trump discussed cooperation on warship construction during their meeting this week, Seoul's presidential office said.
The two leaders met for about 30 minutes on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. According to the presidential office, Lee said shipbuilding-sector cooperation, including the building of warships, was taken up with Trump, and he expects the bilateral partnership to yield tangible results.
The office did not release further details of the discussions. It noted that Hanwha's shipyard in Philadelphia will build vessels for the US military.
The meeting followed a briefing by South Korea's Industry Ministry to lawmakers on Tuesday covering implementation plans under a $350 billion investment package between the two countries. A gas-fired power project in Texas was identified as a possible first investment under that package.
Of the total $350 billion, $150 billion has been set aside for the shipbuilding sector.
