Mother recounts Lindsay Clancy's spiral before children's deaths

Lindsay Clancy's mother testified about her daughter's declining mental health, including fears of being alone and a disclosure of harmful thoughts before the murders.

In a Plymouth, Massachusetts courtroom, Paula Musgrove took the stand to describe the months leading up to the deaths of her three grandchildren. She painted a picture of a devoted mother whose mental health deteriorated sharply starting in October 2022, roughly three months before the killings.

Musgrove, at times emotional, recounted text messages from her daughter pleading for company. One message read, "Mom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit? I'm really sick. Something is wrong," citing severe insomnia and a fear of being alone.

Under questioning from prosecutor Jennifer Sprague, Musgrove acknowledged that her daughter had expressed fears about being by herself. She recalled a visit where she slept alongside Lindsay because her daughter was afraid to be alone, though she could not pinpoint the exact date, estimating it was in late November or early December.

The testimony took a somber turn when Musgrove described a kitchen conversation in December. Lindsay, appearing nervous, told her mother and then-husband Patrick Clancy that she had "thoughts of harming the children." Musgrove testified that she did not consider committing her daughter or having her stay in Connecticut, stating she was not concerned for the children's safety at that time because she was present.

Despite the alarming disclosure, Musgrove described her daughter as a "very loving mother" who was dedicated and fun, always wanting many children. She maintained that Lindsay would do anything for her kids, calling her a loving mother in her testimony.
