Lindsay Clancy trial: Jury hears closing arguments in deaths of three children

Closing arguments concluded on Thursday in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse accused of killing her three children in January 2023. The jury is now tasked with determining whether she bears criminal responsibility for the deaths.

Clancy, who sat in the Plymouth, Massachusetts courtroom, was seen wiping tears from her face as both the defense and prosecution presented their final cases. Her mother, Paula Musgrove, was also present in the courtroom.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington argued that Clancy was a devoted mother and nurse whose mental state had deteriorated. He described her as someone who had done "nothing wrong in her life," and placed blame on what he called "lousy medical care" for failing to properly address her condition. The defense maintains that Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings.

Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague countered that the case is not about the broader mental health system or diagnostic criteria. She urged the jury to focus on Clancy's actions on the night of January 24, 2023, and her mental state at that specific time, calling any broader discussion of healthcare a "distraction" from the facts of the case.

In his instructions, Judge William Sullivan told the jury they may consider evidence of Clancy's mental condition, including any impairment or the effects of prescription drugs she was taking, when evaluating the elements of second-degree murder.

Both sides agree that Clancy killed her children. The central question for the jury is whether her mental state at the time negates criminal intent.
