Lindsay Clancy Trial: Jury Deadlock Persists as Single Holdout Juror Questioned

Jurors in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial are set to resume deliberations for a seventh day on Friday, following an unusual disclosure that the panel may be split 11-1. The jury foreperson informed the judge on Thursday that a single juror is not adhering to the court's instructions on reasonable doubt, offering the clearest indication yet of the obstacle to a verdict.
The note delivered to the judge prompted individual, private questioning of each juror. Afterward, the judge re-read his instructions on reasonable doubt and sent the jury back to continue their work, but they were soon dismissed for the day. The jury has now twice informed the court that it cannot reach an agreement.
Clancy, a 36-year-old former labor and delivery nurse, does not dispute that she strangled her three children in the basement of her home in 2023. Her defense argues she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time, a condition that experts say affects 1 to 2 per 1,000 women after delivery and can impair a person's sense of reality. Prosecutors, however, contend that Clancy was aware of her actions.
Defense attorney Kevin Reddington stated after Thursday's proceedings that he hopes attorneys will be allowed to argue the specifics of any further questioning of the holdout juror in open court, rather than in a private sidebar. If the jury remains unable to reach a unanimous verdict, the judge could declare a mistrial.
