Helicopter Crashes in Los Angeles Parking Lot, Killing at Least One

A helicopter crashed into a parking lot in Los Angeles on Tuesday, killing at least one person, officials said. The person who died had been outside in the lot at the time of the crash, according to Capt. Branden Silverman, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The aircraft came down into or beside parked vehicles in a lot serving a large one-story building, Silverman said during a news conference. The type of business at the building was not immediately known.

Silverman described the helicopter as "pretty well destroyed" and said crews would need to sift through the rubble to establish how many people had been on board. It was not immediately clear whether anyone had survived the crash.

"We're trying to determine how many patients were inside the helicopter," Silverman said.

The crash occurred near the scene of a separate, deadly incident earlier in the day, in which two people were killed and six others were injured when an SUV struck a city bus. Images and video circulating online showed roughly half of the SUV embedded in the side of the bus, with a large contingent of fire crews working around the wreckage.

Authorities did not immediately say whether the two crashes were connected.
