Centre cuts LPG refill booking gap to 25 days for all consumers
The Petroleum Ministry has reduced the LPG refill booking interval to a uniform 25 days for all domestic consumers, easing the earlier rural-urban distinction.
The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has revised the booking interval for domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) refills, setting a uniform gap of 25 days for all consumers across the country. The decision, communicated to state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs), replaces the earlier staggered schedule that allowed bookings every 25 days in urban areas but required a 45-day wait in rural regions.
Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi shared the ministry's directive on social media on Monday. The communication notes that the earlier timelines were introduced in March 2026 as a temporary demand-management measure following supply pressures triggered by the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East in February that year.
The ministry's letter states that the revised interval comes in light of the current LPG supply position and a considerable reduction in refill backlogs compared to the situation when the restrictions were first imposed. It directs Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to implement the new 25-day inter-refill booking interval uniformly across urban and rural areas with immediate effect.
This move follows earlier government efforts to shore up domestic cooking-gas supplies, including setting maximum LPG production targets for 24 refinery and upstream oil companies with a combined capacity of 63.81 thousand metric tonnes per day (KTPD), aimed at enhancing resilience against potential supply disruptions.
