Lukashenko floats US role in Belarus-Gazprom fertiliser plant
Lukashenko says Gazprom will help build a nitrogen fertiliser plant in Belarus and proposes inviting the US to take part using American technology.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said he and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed that Gazprom would take part in a project to build a nitrogen fertiliser plant in Belarus, and he proposed bringing the United States into the venture.
Lukashenko said a site for the plant had already been chosen. He suggested offering the Americans a role, noting that they need fertilisers, including nitrogen-based ones, and inviting them to build the facility jointly using US technology.
If Washington does not take part, he said, the plant would be built with Gazprom and the Russians, and the finished product sold.
The remarks come as Belarus, a close ally of Russia, has sought to improve relations with Washington after years of isolation and Western sanctions. Contacts between Minsk and the administration of US President Donald Trump have intensified since 2025.
On Monday, Trump said Washington was working on a deal to buy potash fertiliser from Belarus at a price lower than what the United States currently pays Canada.
