Lula's Lead Narrows Over Bolsonaro in Brazil Election Poll
A new Quaest poll shows Lula leading Bolsonaro by just 3 points in a runoff, within the margin of error.
A fresh opinion poll from Quaest indicates that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's advantage over challenger Flavio Bolsonaro has shrunk as Brazil's October election approaches.
In a simulated second-round runoff, Lula garners 43% support against Bolsonaro's 40%. This marks a tighter race compared to an earlier Quaest survey from August 5, which showed Lula ahead by 44% to 39%. The latest figures are statistically a dead heat, given the poll's margin of error of two percentage points.
For the first round, Lula leads the field with 38% of voting intentions, followed by Bolsonaro at 31%. Other candidates trail significantly, with Renan Santos and Ronaldo Caiado each at 4%, and Romeu Zema at 2%.
Flavio Bolsonaro, a senator, is the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Should no candidate secure more than 50% of valid votes in the first round, the top two contenders will proceed to a runoff.
The poll surveyed 2,004 people between August 10 and 13 and was commissioned by the local media outlet Globo.
