Lula Retains Slim Lead Over Flavio Bolsonaro in Datafolha Runoff Poll
Datafolha's latest survey shows Lula leading Flavio Bolsonaro 46%-44% in a potential runoff, with first-round support at 39% and 35% respectively.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva continues to hold a narrow numerical advantage over Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in a possible runoff for the October election, according to a Datafolha poll released on Friday.
In a hypothetical second round, Lula is backed by 46% of respondents, while Flavio Bolsonaro, a son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, draws 44%. Those figures are unchanged from the previous week's survey.
The first-round picture shows a slight tightening. Lula leads with 39% support, followed by Flavio Bolsonaro at 35%. Augusto Cury stands at 6%, and Ronaldo Caiado at 4%. In the earlier poll, Lula had 38% and Flavio Bolsonaro 33%.
Under Brazilian electoral rules, if no candidate secures more than 50% of valid votes in the first round, the two top finishers proceed to a runoff. Such a second round has occurred in every presidential election since 2002.
Datafolha interviewed 2,002 people between September 8 and 10. The poll carries a margin of error of two percentage points.
