Astronauts Showcase Lunar Spacesuits at German Moon Simulator
German astronauts Maurer and Gerst presented new lunar spacesuits to regional leaders at the LUNA analog facility, a key training ground for future Moon missions.
German astronauts Matthias Maurer and Alexander Gerst gave officials a firsthand look at newly developed spacesuits during a visit to the LUNA analog facility near Cologne on Thursday. The facility, operated by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), simulates the lunar surface for training astronauts and testing robotic systems bound for the Moon.
The demonstration was attended by Hendrik Wuest, Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, who viewed the equipment designed for future human and robotic exploration missions under the European Space Agency's lunar program.
LUNA serves as a critical testing ground, replicating lunar conditions so that astronauts and engineers can refine procedures and hardware before deployment. The event highlighted Germany's growing role in preparing for sustained presence on the Moon, with the facility enabling realistic rehearsals of surface operations.
