Macron Pledges Solidarity With Germany Over Russian Drone Attack
Macron backs Germany after it blamed Russia for a drone attack at Leipzig airport, calling it hybrid warfare.
French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday reiterated France's full support for Germany after Berlin accused Moscow of orchestrating an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month.
Speaking alongside Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten in Eindhoven, Macron described the incident as part of a broader pattern of Russian interference. "This is interference, it's this hybrid war that Russia is waging against us," he told reporters.
The German government on Tuesday formally blamed Russia for the attempted attack, which involved an explosive-laden drone found near a Ukrainian aircraft on August 4. The device was defused, and German officials said the incident represented a new level of threat. Berlin also announced it would close a Russian consulate as part of its response.
Macron's remarks came during a visit focused on Franco-Dutch cooperation in technology and innovation. He highlighted the partnership as a driving force in AI, quantum computing, and electronics, calling it essential for Europe's future industrialisation and strategic autonomy.
The French leader thanked Jetten for his hospitality and stressed that European nations must stand together in the face of external threats.
