Madiga leaders in Karnataka condemned recent caste-based violence and untouchability, urging the state to protect Dalits and act against assailants.
Madiga community leaders in Karnataka have condemned a spate of caste-based violence, discrimination and untouchability reported from several districts, and criticised the State government for not doing enough to stop such atrocities.
Speaking at a press conference, Hanumanth Itagi, a former CMC member and Madiga leader, said Dalits had faced atrocities and killings in Lingsagur and Gursunagi in Raichur and Yadgir districts.
Mr. Itagi urged the State government and the Home Department to guarantee the safety of Dalit communities against repeated attacks, and said those responsible must be punished in accordance with the law. He also called for stronger monitoring mechanisms at the district level through the Home Department to secure fundamental rights and equality.
According to Mr. Itagi, the Home Minister has directed officials to improve documentation, streamline investigations and track the progress of all registered atrocity cases.
Community leaders Basavaraja Metri Naikal, Shivaraja Dasanakeri, Anil Kumar Karate and Chandrashekhar Kadesoor were present at the press conference.
