Madurai Meenakshi Temple Consecration Draws Devotees as Final Rites Begin

Devotees holding permit passes arrived in large numbers at the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai as poojas for the consecration ceremony were set to begin. Final preparations for the event were completed hours before the sacred rites commenced.

Tamil Nadu Minister for Energy Resources and Law C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar, who inspected the arrangements shortly before the ceremony, said hosting the consecration under the present administration was a source of profound joy. He stated that every arrangement had been carried out under the direct instructions of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who had personally reviewed the progress of the consecration works over the past three weeks.

"Whatever festival takes place in Madurai is always special," Mr. Kumar said, adding that the happiness of the people and all devotees was the government's true happiness. He emphasised that the primary focus remained the smooth and successful completion of the grand ceremony.

To handle the large influx of devotees, authorities arranged uninterrupted drinking water and electricity supplies, along with robust alternative contingency plans. Fully equipped medical units and ambulances were stationed on standby.

A filtering system based on pass colours — red, yellow, purple and green — is in place, directing devotees to specific access areas closest to the temple core. Devotees without passes are being categorised as general attendees and will be permitted entry after the official ceremony concludes at 10 a.m.

Drinking water and toilet facilities have been set up at regular intervals throughout the area for the public and police personnel. A special cordon designated for VIPs, judges and officials has been active since 3 a.m.

Many devotees said that simply hearing the hymns directly from the temple would suffice, and that receiving blessings through the holy water sprayed from atop the temple would make the experience even more meaningful.
