Man Arrested After Petrol Bomb Mishap Near Girlfriend's Home in Madurai

A 23-year-old man was taken into custody in Tamil Nadu's Madurai district on Monday morning after allegedly throwing a petrol bomb near his girlfriend's residence. The entire sequence of events was recorded on a nearby CCTV camera.

The suspect, identified as Nagarjuna, works as a load man. Police officials stated that he appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the incident. Preliminary inquiries suggest that he was upset after his girlfriend, with whom he had been in a relationship for roughly six years, had stopped communicating with him for the past week.

Visuals from the CCTV footage show Nagarjuna lighting an object before hurling it. However, the projectile burst into flames and accidentally fell back onto him, causing him to flee the scene immediately. The footage also shows another man sleeping outside a nearby shop, seemingly unaffected by the commotion.

A police officer confirmed that Nagarjuna is being processed for judicial remand. "He was drunk and upset that his girlfriend... refused to speak to him over the last week," the officer said, adding that further questioning is underway.

The arrest comes amid heightened political scrutiny over law and order in the state. The incident follows a heated debate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly regarding crime and women's safety, where opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin alleged a rise in murders and other offenses, while the ruling party countered claims regarding data transparency during the previous administration.
