Madurantakam bypoll: PMK abstention reshapes contest as rolls see marginal dip
PMK's decision to stay out of the Madurantakam bypoll alters the contest, while the electoral roll revision had only a limited impact on electorate size.
The decision by the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) to abstain from the Madurantakam bypoll has introduced a fresh element into the constituency's electoral calculations, even as the revision of electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise appears to have had a muted effect on the size of the electorate.
According to the available data, the electorate in Madurantakam declined only marginally following the SIR. That limited contraction stands in contrast to the broader pattern seen in several other constituencies, where the roll revision led to more substantial deletions.
At the same time, the total number of voters in 2026 is significantly higher than the figure recorded during the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The combination of a marginal post-SIR dip and a sharp year-on-year increase suggests that the rolls have expanded considerably over the intervening period, even after the revision exercise.
The abstention of PMK, a party with a presence in the region, adds another layer to the changing electoral equations in Madurantakam. With one contender stepping back, the contest is now shaped by a different set of calculations than would have been the case had the party fielded a candidate.
The bypoll is thus being fought on a voter base that is larger than in 2024 but only slightly smaller than before the SIR, with the absence of a key player further altering the dynamics of the race.
