Three Vels College students killed in highway car crash near Madurantakam
Three Chennai college students died and four were injured when their car overturned after a tyre burst near Madurantakam on Friday night.
Three college students were killed and four others seriously injured when their car overturned on the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway near Madurantakam in Chengalpattu district late Friday night (August 28, 2026).
The group, all students of Vels College in Chennai, was returning from Puducherry when the accident occurred. Police said a rear tyre of the vehicle burst suddenly, causing the driver to lose control. The car veered across the road before flipping over.
All seven occupants sustained serious injuries. Fire and Rescue Services personnel and police reached the spot and shifted the injured to government hospitals in Chengalpattu and Madurantakam, where they are undergoing treatment.
The deceased were identified as Deepak Raj (19) of Vadalur in Cuddalore district, Puyuterin Staniko (22) of Vilavancode in Kanyakumari district, and Raj Prasad (19) of Pasupathipalayam in Karur district.
The crash caused heavy traffic congestion on the highway. Police personnel were deployed to regulate traffic and clear the affected stretch. The Madurantakam police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
